Carl D. Oblinger


Carl D. Oblinger was the Circuit Clerk of Sangamon County from 1992 to 1996. Oblinger was born in Springfield, IL  on August 3, 1944 to Walter and Josephine Oblinger. Josephine was a notable member of the Springfield community through her service in public office. Walter was an attorney and an FBI agent.

Oblinger graduated Springfield High School and then proceeded to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Franklin & Marshall College. After Franklin & Marshall, Oblinger earned his Masterís degree in American History from The Johns Hopkins University. He then obtained a Doctorate in History from Lehigh University.  After completing his studies in Pennsylvania, Oblinger returned to the Springfield area and has been a lifelong resident and historian since.

Oblinger is a published author, and his books include: Interviewing the People of Pennsylvania; A Conceptual Guide to Oral History, published by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1981; Cornwall: The People and Culture of an industiral Camelot, 1890 - 1980, published by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1984; and Divided Kingdom: Work, Community, and the Mining Wars in the Central Illinois Coal Fields During the Great Depression, published by the Illinois State Historical in 1991. Divided Kingdom is in its second edition, which was published in 2004. Oblinger has also contributed to the Illinois Times with his article ďA New Form of Southern Slavery Led to Northern Race RiotsĒ in the October 29, 2008 edition of the periodical.

Carl Oblinger is a former mayor of Chatham and as of 2007 holds the position of Assistant Professor of History & Humanities at Benedictine University in Springfield, IL.  He also serves as a trustee for Lincoln Land Community College and is an appointed member of the Springfield Planning and Zoning Commission until his term expires in August of 2015.
